How long a catheter is left in depends on the type in place:
- Intermittent Urinary Catheters
These catheters are not left in place and as such, should only be left in until urine stops flowing. A new catheter is generally used each time.
- Indwelling Urinary Catheters
The majority will need to be changed at least once every three months.
- Suprapubic Catheters
These can be left in for between 6-8 weeks before needing to be changed.
