When you have sensitive skin, or you take care of someone who does, it can be hard to know how you should go about taking care of it. Even the simplest thing, like the wrong laundry detergent, can cause a lot of pain and stress.

Don’t worry, though, we have 6 basic tips that will get you on the right path when it comes to washing clothes and linen for sensitive skin!

1. Wash All Clothes Before Use

Whether it’s you who has sensitive skin, or you care for children or elderly people who do, it’s important that you wash their new clothes before trying them on. Clothing retailers often use chemicals to keep clothes wrinkle free in their packaging. These chemicals can irritate soft and sensitive skin, so give them a quick wash before use.

2. Separate Clothes Well

This may seem like obvious advice, but you should separate stained or soiled clothes from clothes which are simply in need of a quick wash. Likewise, you shouldn’t mix colours and white clothes.

3. Use The Right Kind Of Detergent

A non-bio detergent, like Fairy for example, is best for people with sensitive skin. However, if you, your dependents, or your patients have particularly sensitive skin a milder formula might be necessary.

4. Use Sensitive-skin Fabric Softener

Keeping clothes soft and clean is a big part of taking care of sensitive skin, but the wrong kind of fabric softener could cause a lot of irritation. Use a sensitive or non-fragranced formula to avoid causing rashes.

5. Use The Rinse Cycle

Always use the rinse cycle after washing clothes for someone with sensitive skin. Any detergent residue in the seams or creases of clothing will seep into skin when you sweat and could cause discomfort or irritation. A rinse will remove all traces of washing powder or liquid from the fabric and protect you or your patient from irritation.

6. Removing Stains

Stain removal is a pain at the best of times, but when you are washing clothes for someone who has sensitive skin it can be a difficult and repetitive cycle (especially if they are ill or very young). Most stains can be removed by soaking in cool water with an all-purpose stain remover and then washed with a tough but gentle detergent like Persil. Urine stains, however, will need to be soaked in ammonia (1 table spoon to a cup of water), and oil should be treated with a prewash stain remover, washed on a hot setting, and allowed to air dry.
